Ayaneo halts Next 2 preorders as storage costs spiral
Rising costs for digital storage have forced Ayaneo to suspend preorders for its $1,999 Next 2 handheld, a decision the company describes as a move to avoid further financial damage. The manufacturer admits that building the Windows-based device currently costs nearly double its original retail target, rendering the current pricing model unsustainable.
The company initially gambled on a market correction, launching the device on February 10th despite already elevated storage prices. Management hoped for a stabilization that never materialized, as supply costs accelerated beyond their worst projections. Ayaneo has committed to fulfilling existing orders placed before the suspension but will not accept new buyers for the foreseeable future.
The Next 2, which boasts a 9.06-inch OLED screen, a Ryzen AI Max 385 processor, and 32GB of memory, remains in limbo until market conditions shift. Ayaneo indicated that the pause is temporary, suggesting they might reopen sales if component pricing returns to reasonable levels. For now, the hardware—marketed as a premium portable gaming experience—remains off the table for new customers.
