Canada Nickel's Crawford Project Clears Final Federal Assessment Hurdle
The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada has officially submitted its final report on the Crawford Nickel Project to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change. This submission marks the first time a mining venture has reached the concluding phase of the federal Impact Assessment Act since its 2019 amendment.
The Minister’s Decision Statement is expected within 30 days, a timeline that keeps Canada Nickel Company on track for a potential construction decision in 2027. CEO Mark Selby described the progress as a culmination of years of technical planning and engagement with Indigenous Nations, emphasizing the project's strategic role in the country's critical minerals supply chain.
Located in Ontario’s Critical Minerals Corridor, the Crawford site is positioned to become the Western world’s largest nickel sulphide project. Its development is supported by a federal designation as a Nation-Building Project and inclusion in Ontario’s streamlined "One Project, One Process" framework. Beyond its scale, the project aims to anchor a zero-carbon industrial cluster in the Timmins Nickel District, reflecting the company’s focus on long-term regional economic growth.
