GrubMarket Expands Into Canada With Acquisition of SPUD
San Francisco-based food technology firm GrubMarket has acquired Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery (SPUD), a prominent online grocer in Western Canada. The move integrates SPUD’s established local sourcing network in British Columbia and Alberta into GrubMarket’s global supply chain, marking a major expansion for the AI-focused food eCommerce provider.
Founded in 1997 as Small Potatoes Urban Delivery, the Vancouver-based company operates three distribution centers spanning 85,000 square feet across Burnaby, Calgary, and Edmonton. SPUD manages a fleet of refrigerated vans to distribute fresh produce, dairy, meat, and artisanal goods sourced from more than 800 local farmers and producers. While the grocery delivery service has joined GrubMarket, the transaction excludes SPUD’s brick-and-mortar brands, Blush Lane Organic Market and Be Fresh Market, which remain under the ownership of Third Eye Capital.
Following the acquisition, SPUD will integrate GrubMarket’s proprietary software suite, including the WholesaleWare ERP platform, GrubAssist AI, and the GrubPay digital payment system. GrubMarket CEO Mike Xu noted that the deal leverages SPUD’s loyal customer base and commitment to sustainable agriculture to strengthen the company’s footprint in the Canadian market. SPUD’s current leadership team will continue to manage operations to ensure service continuity for existing suppliers and consumers.
