Jingye Steel Challenges UK Government Over British Steel Nationalization

Jingye Steel Co., Ltd. has formally challenged the UK government’s compulsory nationalization of British Steel, demanding full compensation for its investment after being stripped of its ownership rights. The Chinese firm claims the state takeover, finalized in July 2026, ignores contractual commitments and violates international investment protections.

Jingye acquired the struggling British manufacturer in 2020, claiming to have restored profitability and maintained payrolls through the pandemic and subsequent economic instability. Tensions escalated following the introduction of the Steel Industry (Special Measures) Act 2025, which allowed the government to seize control of the company within six hours. The firm asserts that officials initially encouraged a net-zero transformation plan but later refused to provide promised co-investment, ultimately declaring the asset worthless to avoid compensation.

Financial data from the National Audit Office reveals that state intervention costs have ballooned, reaching £377 million by January 2026, with projections suggesting total expenditures could exceed £1.5 billion by 2028. Jingye has now initiated formal consultation procedures under bilateral investment treaties. The company intends to pursue international arbitration and legal action against individual officials, alleging that the rapid takeover lacked an operational plan and resulted in significant losses to both the private investor and the public purse.
