East Austin Welcomes Seabrook Square I Affordable Housing Complex

Two hundred and four families now have a place to call home in East Austin as the city celebrates the opening of Seabrook Square I. The new development, built on land managed by the Austin Housing Finance Corporation, caters to residents earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income.

The project serves as a cornerstone for the historic J.J. Seabrook neighborhood, blending modern amenities with a deliberate nod to the area's cultural identity. Beyond the residential units—ranging from studios to four-bedroom layouts—the site features an art plaza and designated live-work spaces specifically reserved for local artists.

"Seabrook Square represents the kind of affordable housing we strive to create, housing that is connected to the community," said John Welsh, Senior Vice President at The NHP Foundation. By integrating commercial spaces and community-serving organizations, the developers aimed to prevent displacement while providing long-term stability for working-class residents.

Funding for the three-acre site was secured through voter-approved affordable housing bonds. This opening marks the first phase of a broader initiative, with future plans already in motion to add permanent supportive housing to the property. For project partners, including Capital A Housing and Integral Care, the development proves that high-quality design and social infrastructure can coexist with aggressive affordability targets in a competitive housing market.
