Alliance for OpenUSD Expands Membership and Pushes for ISO Standards
The Alliance for OpenUSD is expanding its global footprint as ByteDance, Huawei, Physicl, and Unity join the organization to standardize 3D data exchange. The move coincides with the start of the ISO certification process for the Core Specification 1.1, a significant milestone designed to reduce friction in industrial and enterprise workflows.
The integration of these new members strengthens the alliance's push to establish OpenUSD as a universal data layer for 3D content. By moving toward international standardization, the group aims to make OpenUSD a mandatory requirement for regulated sectors like manufacturing and automotive, where interoperability is critical for large-scale digital transformation.
Beyond standardization, the alliance is positioning OpenUSD as the foundational architecture for agentic AI. Implementations by companies like NVIDIA, Cesium, and PTC show how AI agents can interact with and modify 3D environments, provided the underlying data is queryable and consistent. At the ongoing SIGGRAPH 2026 conference in Los Angeles, the group is showcasing these advancements through technical sessions and labs, focusing on how shared specifications for geometry, physics, and materials will support the next generation of simulation and robotics.
