Instagram now lets creators swap audio on old posts
Content creators can now retroactively replace the music on previously published photos and videos, allowing them to chase viral trends without deleting and reuploading their work. Jimmy O’Keefe, head of creator product marketing at Instagram, confirmed that users can swap tracks an unlimited number of times without losing existing engagement metrics.

This update marks another pivot toward a creator-first ecosystem, following recent tools like grid reordering and the ability to edit captions on photo sets. While the average user may find the change perplexing, it offers influencers and advertisers a powerful mechanism to recycle content. By updating audio to match current trends, a single video can be refreshed annually, effectively turning static posts into dynamic, evergreen assets.
Instagram confirmed that these audio swaps will not provide an algorithmic boost to old posts, yet the implications for marketing remain significant. Brands can now reheat viral clips with trending soundtracks rather than producing new content from scratch. This shift highlights a widening divide on the platform: while casual users struggle with a feed increasingly dominated by Reels and algorithmic recommendations, the professional creator class gains sophisticated tools to maximize reach and monetization. As Instagram continues to evolve into a repository for ever-changing content, the original vision of the app as a chronological record of personal life continues to fade.
