Microsoft initiates sweeping Xbox restructuring and workforce reductions

A 3 percent accountability margin and soaring component costs have triggered a radical pivot for Microsoft’s gaming division. Following a memo from CEO Asha Sharma and chief content officer Matt Booty, the company has launched a massive reorganization, signaling an end to the current structure of its sprawling studio system.

The scale of the reduction is significant, with 1,600 employees laid off on July 6th and an equal number of departures planned throughout the upcoming fiscal year. Beyond the headcount cuts, the company is decentralizing its portfolio. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions are transitioning back to independence, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are being moved to new ownership. Arkane Studios faces a period of uncertainty as management enters consultations with its Works Council to evaluate strategic options.

Operational shifts extend deep into the subsidiary network, including Activision, Blizzard, and Bethesda, with reports indicating that id Software may lose half of its workforce. These organizational changes arrive alongside a broader commercial recalibration under Sharma, which includes console price hikes, a restructured Game Pass tier system that excludes day-one Call of Duty releases, and a renewed focus on platform-exclusive titles like Gears of War: E-Day.
