Austin Outsourcing Plan Reviews to Manage Development Demand
Faced with persistent staffing gaps and a steady stream of construction permits, the City of Austin has tapped the private firm SAFEbuilt to handle residential and commercial building inspections. The agreement, authorized by the City Council on May 28, aims to clear backlogs while maintaining municipal oversight of local codes.
The partnership integrates SAFEbuilt professionals directly into the existing Austin Development Services workflow. By providing supplemental staff, the city intends to stabilize its review timelines without the immediate commitment of permanent hiring. According to Keith Mars, Director of Austin Development Services, the priority remains a development process that balances safety with responsiveness to the community's needs.
Steven T. Nero, Vice President of Sales at SAFEbuilt, noted that the collaboration is designed to function as an extension of city operations rather than a detached service provider. This model of staff augmentation is increasingly common among municipalities struggling to balance rapid development activity with departmental vacancies. By utilizing external resources, Austin retains control over final development decisions and procedural standards while ensuring that projects continue to move forward.
