Samsung Reinvents the Foldable Form Factor with the Z Fold 8
Samsung has abandoned the tall, narrow dimensions of its previous foldables, opting for a wider, passport-sized frame in the new Z Fold 8. While the radical shift in shape initially appeared awkward in press imagery, the device offers a surprisingly intuitive grip that bridges the gap between the Flip and Fold series.
The company’s latest lineup introduces a confusing split in its flagship identity. The Z Fold 8 acts as a spinoff device, featuring a shorter, broader chassis and a more accessible $1,899.99 price point. Conversely, the Z Fold 8 Ultra serves as the true successor to the Z Fold 7, retaining the familiar squarish inner display and a more robust camera array.
Samsung appears to be using the "Ultra" branding to justify a $2,099.99 price tag, marking a $100 increase over last year's model. By stripping back some hardware on the standard Z Fold 8, Samsung has managed to undercut its previous generation by $100, positioning the new design as a distinct alternative rather than a direct iterative upgrade.
