Black Girl Vitamins Film Exposes Medical Bias in Maternal Healthcare
Four Black women navigate a healthcare system that frequently ignores their pain in the new short film, The Visit. Released during Black Maternal Mental Health Week, the project highlights how systemic medical dismissal and implicit bias accumulate over time, often resulting in life-threatening health consequences for patients.
The film connects the experiences of women at different life stages to illustrate the broader reality of health inequities. By documenting how dismissed symptoms and delayed care compound, the narrative emphasizes the urgent need for providers to validate the concerns of Black patients. Jennifer Juma, Chief Strategy Officer at Black Girl Vitamins, noted that the project serves as a catalyst for honest dialogue regarding medical accountability.
To move beyond awareness, Black Girl Vitamins has launched a strategic collaboration with Mamatoto Village. This initiative focuses on elevating lived experiences and engaging stakeholders to drive tangible improvements in maternal health outcomes. The film serves as the opening chapter in a series of advocacy efforts from the company, which has been working to address health disparities since its founding in 2021. The production is currently available for public viewing on YouTube as part of a campaign to ensure Black women are heard and believed by the medical establishment.
