Get A Drip Launches Oral Wegovy to Bypass Injection Barriers
Patients in the UK struggling with obesity now have an alternative to weekly injections, as private healthcare provider Get A Drip introduces the newly approved oral version of Wegovy. The move follows a recent licensing decision by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, aiming to expand access for those hesitant about needle-based treatments.
The daily tablet formulation contains semaglutide, mirroring the appetite-regulating effects of its injectable predecessor. Dr. Luke Pratsides, Chief Medical Officer at Get A Drip, noted that the needle remains a significant psychological hurdle for many patients. By removing this barrier, the provider hopes to increase the reach of GLP-1 therapy, which is currently recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for individuals with a BMI of 27 or above who present with weight-related comorbidities.
The UK faces a substantial public health challenge, with NHS England reporting that 30% of adults live with obesity. Beyond weight management, practitioners are increasingly looking toward the broader metabolic applications of these drugs. Dr. Pratsides highlighted ongoing investigations into using GLP-1 treatments for fatty liver disease, a condition affecting nearly one in three people globally. While the oral medication is now accessible through private prescription, patients must undergo a formal eligibility assessment to ensure the program is suitable for their specific health needs.
