Jacksonville to Host Inaugural UPSHOT Championship Weekend
The VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville will transform into the epicenter of elite women’s basketball on August 29, as the UPSHOT League concludes its inaugural season. The weekend of events culminates in a championship game that will crown the league’s first titleholder and establish a new professional legacy.

The championship weekend extends beyond the final buzzer, featuring a series of community-focused events beginning August 28. Programming includes a coaches clinic, a youth basketball session, and a curated discussion series centered on the expansion of the women’s game. On the day of the final, a fan fest and a business showcase featuring local entrepreneurs will occupy the arena concourse, emphasizing the league’s "Show UP" ethos of community integration and professional development.
Commissioner Donna Orender highlighted the milestone as a validation of the league’s mission to provide a high-level platform for elite talent. The roster of competing teams—the Jacksonville Waves, Savannah Steel, Greensboro Groove, and Charlotte Crown—boasts significant pedigree, with over 70% of players possessing WNBA experience or direct professional ties. With all four founding teams currently in contention for the two available berths, the competition remains tight as they vie to have their names permanently etched into the league’s record books.
