California Launches Air Conditioning Repair Aid for Military Families

The initiative, which officially debuted on July 17 at the San Diego Stand Down, expands upon the existing Cool Air Rebate Program. While the standard state program provides 90% coverage for the general public, this new tier specifically targets the military community to ensure veterans and their dependents are not forced to endure high temperatures in non-functional vehicles. Mike Tanner, executive director of the Car Care Council, noted that the program aims to alleviate the financial burden on those who have served, ensuring that limited or fixed incomes do not prevent access to reliable transportation.

California hosts the nation's largest veteran population at 1.6 million, alongside 157,000 active-duty service members. Akilah Templeton, president and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego, emphasized that the program addresses a critical barrier to long-term stability for these individuals. Since its inception in 2024, the parent program has injected $8 million into the local economy by partnering with nearly 500 automotive shops to repair refrigerant leaks. The effort is funded through unclaimed deposits on R-134a refrigerant cans and managed in coordination with the California Air Resources Board.
