Meta avoids bellwether trial as teen plaintiff drops addiction lawsuit
A 15-year-old Florida plaintiff has abruptly withdrawn his lawsuit against Meta just days before a scheduled Los Angeles trial. The case, which sought to hold the social media giant accountable for allegedly addictive features, concludes without a settlement, marking a significant reprieve for the company in ongoing litigation.
The plaintiff, identified as R.K.C., had previously reached undisclosed settlements with TikTok, Snap, and YouTube. His legal team, Emily Jeffcott and Rahul Ravipudi, cited the desire to avoid a grueling trial and a focus on personal recovery as primary reasons for the exit. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone characterized the legal action as baseless, affirming the company’s intent to continue contesting similar claims in court.
This development interrupts a series of bellwether trials designed to test the liability of tech platforms for youth mental health outcomes. While Meta and YouTube were recently found negligent in a separate case involving $6 million in damages, the landscape remains volatile. Meta still faces a heavy docket, including seven remaining bellwether cases in California and an upcoming federal trial brought by state attorneys general who allege the company misled the public regarding the safety of its addictive features.
