Stamford Breaks Ground on Avon Theatre’s Multi-Million Dollar Expansion

The ambitious reconstruction project will transform the existing facility into a sophisticated cinema arts center, featuring three state-of-the-art screening venues and an dedicated education center. Technical upgrades include the installation of 4K HDR BARCO laser projection systems and immersive Dolby Atmos sound, paired with comprehensive accessibility improvements to the lobby, seating, and common areas. A new wine bar and café will serve as expanded community gathering spaces, shifting the theater's identity toward a multipurpose destination for film and education.

Board Co-Chairs Susan Cullman and Arthur Selkowitz described the project as a critical investment in the city's cultural future. Executive Director Peter H. Gistelinck noted that the expansion allows the organization to broaden its programming range, from classic film screenings to emerging filmmaker showcases. Construction is slated for completion in September 2027, with a grand public reopening following in late October. While the physical site remains closed, the theater will maintain its programming through the Avon on Tour initiative, hosting events at various locations across Fairfield County until the facility is ready for its next chapter.
