Research from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety indicates that wind-driven embers, rather than direct flame contact, are the primary cause of home ignitions. These embers can travel well ahead of a fire front, accumulating in gutters or entering vents long before the main blaze arrives.

Steve Bennett, Senior Director of Climate Science at Mercury Insurance, notes that wildfire behavior is far more nuanced than simple proximity to a fire. Topography plays a critical role, as canyons and ridges funnel winds and accelerate fire spread uphill. Because every property features different vegetation, building materials, and micro-climates, two homes on the same street can experience vastly different levels of exposure. Strengthening roof materials, securing attic vents, and maintaining a clear perimeter remain the most effective ways for residents to mitigate these localized threats.
