Edward O'Keefe Departs Theodore Roosevelt Library for WNET Group
Less than three weeks after the grand opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, founding CEO Edward F. O'Keefe has announced his departure to lead The WNET Group. O'Keefe, who spent seven years guiding the institution from an abstract vision to a physical reality, will step down on September 18.
The transition follows a period of intense activity for the North Dakota site. Since its July 4 debut, the library has hosted more than 40,000 visitors and registered 3,500 members, signaling a successful launch in the Badlands. Hilary Hamm, chair of the Board of Trustees, noted that the board has already initiated a national search for a successor to maintain the institution's momentum. O'Keefe’s new role at the helm of New York’s flagship PBS station, The WNET Group, marks a return to the public media sector.
Theodore Roosevelt V, the former president’s great-great-grandson, praised O'Keefe for transforming a project that began with no land or architectural plans into a functioning landmark. During the interim, the existing leadership team will oversee operations, programming, and the facility's ongoing development. O’Keefe stated that he departs with full confidence in the staff, emphasizing that the library’s mission to foster citizenship and conservation remains firmly established.
