Ultra Maritime Tests Sea Spear Sonar in U.S. Navy Lanternfish Exercise
Off the coast of Keyport, Washington, the U.S. Navy turned its attention to the murky challenges of modern littoral defense during the 2026 Lanternfish exercise. There, Ultra Maritime deployed its Sea Spear sonar system to tackle a growing tactical headache: the detection and classification of advanced unmanned underwater vehicles.

The demonstration proved the system could consistently track medium- and large-diameter UUVs in a realistic port protection scenario. By transmitting live acoustic track data to command centers, the technology aims to solve the persistent problem of maintaining undersea awareness in high-traffic or contested maritime zones. This trial served as a high-stakes proving ground for the company’s push into autonomous, scalable surveillance.
A key component of the demonstration involved integrating Sea Spear with Anduril’s Seabed Sentry. This collaboration creates a distributed network capable of being launched from either manned or unmanned platforms. Because the system can function as either a permanent installation or an attritable asset, it offers naval commanders a flexible alternative to traditional, static sensor arrays. As undersea threats become more sophisticated, this shift toward autonomous, deployable networks provides a new layer of resilience for maritime defense missions across global waterways.
