The death of 25-year-old Joan Sebastian Guerrero, who was killed by immigration agents during a traffic stop, has galvanized local opposition to federal enforcement tactics. While Collins requested that the Department of Homeland Security pause such operations following the incident, President Donald Trump rejected her plea. Maine Democrats argue this gesture is insufficient, pointing to the senator’s history of approving record-level funding for the agency.
Devon Murphy-Anderson, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party, stated that Collins cannot distance herself from the violence while simultaneously providing the financial resources that enable it. When asked last week, the senator declined to express regret for her votes on agency appropriations. Candidate Troy Jackson amplified this message on social media, accusing Collins of enabling a "rogue terror campaign" through her legislative record.
