Electric Aviation Trials Set for Scottish Highlands in 2027
A £1.5 million grant from the UK Department for Transport will fuel Project SEAN, an initiative designed to test electric aircraft across Scotland’s rugged northern regions. Starting in 2027, the consortium plans to run a three-month demonstration program to evaluate sustainable transit for remote communities and medical services.
The Scottish Electric Aviation Network, led by Bristow Helicopters Ltd., intends to deploy BETA Technologies’ ALIA CTOL (CX300) aircraft for these trials. Operating out of Inverness Airport, the flights will connect with regional hubs like Wick John O'Groats, focusing on the practical challenges of charging infrastructure and airport readiness. Beyond Bristow and BETA, the consortium includes Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, the Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership, Skyports Infrastructure, and Electric Aviation Maven.
Simon Meakins, the project lead for Bristow, emphasized that the initiative moves the industry from theoretical planning to real-world execution. By testing passenger, cargo, and medical routes, the partners aim to produce evidence-based recommendations for future commercial deployment. These flights serve as a critical test for integrating zero-emission technology into existing regional networks, directly supporting broader decarbonization goals across the United Kingdom.
