US Government Secures 10 Percent Stake in Intel

President Donald Trump has brokered a deal to acquire a 10 percent stake in Intel, effectively transforming nearly $9 billion in federal commitments into a direct ownership position. The arrangement forces the struggling chipmaker to accept government equity in exchange for funds already allocated under the CHIPS Act and Secure Enclave programs.

The capital infusion consists of $5.7 billion in remaining CHIPS Act grants and $3.2 billion from the Secure Enclave program. Intel, which previously secured $2.2 billion in federal support, clarified that the government will maintain a passive ownership role, holding no board seats or governance rights. CEO Lip-Bu Tan signaled compliance with the administration’s terms, framing the deal as a necessary step to bolster domestic manufacturing leadership.

This move follows intense public pressure from the White House, where Trump had previously demanded Tan’s resignation over alleged ties to China. By positioning the investment as a condition for the executive to retain his position, the administration has blurred the boundaries between regulatory oversight and private enterprise. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted the conversion was designed to stabilize domestic production, while Trump indicated this transactional approach to corporate management will likely extend to other industry players. The agreement arrives shortly after SoftBank pledged a separate $2 billion investment to expand Intel’s US-based chipmaking operations.
