Meta Pivots AI Strategy Toward Productivity Tools

Mark Zuckerberg is shifting Meta AI from social entertainment toward functional utility, challenging the dominance of ChatGPT and Gemini. Powered by the new Muse Spark 1.1 model, the chatbot now integrates directly with user calendars and personal data to manage logistics, research, and daily scheduling tasks autonomously.

This move marks a distinct departure from Meta’s previous internal roadmap. Chief Product Officer Chris Cox had previously signaled that the company’s focus would remain on social connection and entertainment rather than chasing the productivity-heavy models favored by OpenAI and Anthropic. The new capabilities represent a direct reversal of that stance, aiming to embed the assistant into the mundane rhythms of daily planning.

The updated tool now handles multi-step requests, such as browsing Facebook Marketplace for furniture within a specific renovation budget or identifying restaurant availability that aligns with a user’s existing schedule. Meta claims the assistant can now be tasked once to handle recurring needs, such as weekly meal planning or monitoring product restocks, without requiring constant re-prompting. By summarizing web research into structured reports and presentations, the platform is positioning itself as a comprehensive digital aide rather than a simple conversational interface.
