YouTube Moves AI Labels Into Plain Sight

YouTube is overhauling how it labels AI-generated content, shifting disclosures from buried sub-menus to prominent positions on the video player. The platform intends to eliminate the guesswork for viewers by mandating clear, standardized tags for photorealistic media, while simultaneously deploying automated detection systems to flag undisclosed AI usage.

For long-form videos, the new AI label will sit directly beneath the player, just above the description box. Previously, viewers had to manually expand the description and navigate to a specific section to verify if a video was synthetically altered. On Shorts, the disclosure will now appear as an onscreen overlay, ensuring the information remains visible even during rapid scrolling. This unified formatting applies specifically to photorealistic content; unrealistic or animated clips will continue to house disclosures within the expanded description.

YouTube is also moving toward automated enforcement. Starting this month, the platform will implement internal signals designed to detect significant photorealistic AI manipulation. While creators are still required to self-disclose their use of AI tools, the system will apply labels automatically if the platform’s detection algorithms identify synthetic content that a creator failed to flag. If a video is incorrectly marked, creators retain the ability to challenge the status in YouTube Studio. However, disclosures remain permanent for content utilizing Google’s proprietary tools like Veo or Dream Screen, or files carrying C2PA metadata. YouTube maintains that these labels are strictly for transparency and will not influence a video’s reach or monetization potential.
