San Diego Readers Crown Broken Yolk Cafe Top Breakfast Spot
After nearly five decades of operation, the original Pacific Beach institution has secured the "Best Breakfast" and "Best Brunch" titles in The San Diego Union-Tribune’s 2026 Reader’s Poll, reinforcing its status as a local cornerstone despite a rapid national expansion.
Since its 1979 debut just steps from the Pacific Beach surf, the chain has evolved from a single storefront into a 42-location franchise. Owner John Gelastopoulos attributes this enduring popularity to a combination of original menu staples that defined the brand’s early success and newer, inventive dishes designed to capture a younger demographic. While the company maintains its deep roots in Southern California, it is now preparing to push beyond its traditional borders.
The cafe recently finalized a development agreement with multi-unit operator Marc Clapper to open two locations in Lafayette, Indiana. This move marks the brand's first venture into the Midwest, signaling a significant shift in its growth strategy. With 15 locations currently serving San Diego County, the company continues to leverage its reputation for scratch-made ingredients and generous portions to anchor its expansion into new markets.
