Amazon Files to Launch Massive Satellite Network by 2028
Amazon has submitted a formal application to the FCC to deploy a constellation of 5,105 satellites, aiming to bring direct-to-device voice, messaging, and data services to users globally. The project, slated for a 2028 launch, seeks to integrate existing spectrum partnerships to compete directly in the satellite-to-cellular market.
The proposed network would function as an extension of Amazon’s broader Leo platform, complementing its existing broadband initiatives. By processing signals directly in orbit, the company claims it can significantly enhance performance for emergency services and standard consumer connectivity. This expansion marks a sharp increase in scale for Amazon, as the new fleet would nearly double the size of its initial 3,200-satellite project, of which only 375 have reached orbit as of early July.
Strategic positioning remains central to the plan. Amazon intends to leverage Globalstar’s spectrum to facilitate direct-to-device capabilities, including potential collaboration with Apple. The FCC filing also indicates an intent to utilize spectrum assigned to Iridium’s network for operations outside the United States. This move adds a layer of complexity to the sector, specifically as Rocket Lab pursues its own acquisition of Iridium. Amazon expects to operate through partnerships with mobile network operators, mirroring the model currently employed by Starlink and T-Mobile.
