Meta restricts blocking of its new AI assistant on Threads
Threads users are pushing back against a new Meta AI integration that currently lacks a standard block function. While the company positions the tool as a helpful way to gather context within conversations, the inability to opt out of the assistant entirely has sparked widespread frustration across the platform.
The feature, currently in testing across Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, allows users to tag a Meta AI account to generate answers or provide background information directly in a thread. The functionality mirrors the interaction model seen on platforms like X with xAI’s Grok. However, unlike standard user profiles, the Meta AI account does not offer a block option in its settings menu, leading to a surge of complaints from those who view the presence of the bot as intrusive.
Meta spokesperson Christine Pai stated that users can manage their experience by muting or hiding AI replies, or by selecting the “Not interested” option on specific posts. Despite these mitigation tools, the backlash remains significant. Users have reported encountering errors when attempting to block the account, and the topic “Users cannot block Meta AI” briefly trended with over one million posts before disappearing from search results. This push into generative AI on Threads follows Meta’s multibillion-dollar investment in AI talent and the recent rollout of its Muse Spark model, signaling an aggressive strategy to integrate automated assistants deeper into its ecosystem.
