OpenAI Targets 2027 Launch for AI-Centric Smartphone
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that OpenAI is accelerating development of its first hardware device, aiming for a 2027 mass production start. The project, which diverges from previous rumors of a Jony Ive-designed gadget, positions the AI firm to compete directly with established flagship mobile manufacturers.
The device will reportedly rely on a customized version of MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 chipset. This silicon is expected to feature an advanced image signal processor designed specifically for enhanced HDR and superior real-world visual sensing. To manage complex processing loads, the architecture will likely utilize dual-NPU units, allowing the handset to execute vision and language tasks simultaneously while leveraging high-speed LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage.
Kuo projects total shipments between 2027 and 2028 could hit 30 million units. Reaching this volume would place the newcomer in the same market tier as a typical Samsung flagship, signaling a highly ambitious entry into the hardware sector for a company primarily known for its software ecosystems.
