Amazon revives smartphone ambitions with AI-focused Transformer
A decade after the Fire Phone’s spectacular collapse, Amazon is quietly developing a new handset codenamed “Transformer.” Led by former Microsoft executive J Allard, the project aims to center hardware around a revamped Alexa rather than a traditional operating system, potentially bypassing the app store ecosystem entirely in favor of AI-driven mini-apps.
Development is currently housed within Amazon’s ZeroOne group, where teams have experimented with both smartphone and minimalist “dumbphone” form factors. Designers have drawn inspiration from the $700 Light Phone, which prioritizes a stripped-back, monochrome interface over complex software suites. By shifting toward an AI-first architecture, the company hopes to sidestep the app-compatibility hurdles that crippled its initial foray into mobile hardware back in 2014.
Success remains uncertain as the company struggles to maintain consumer trust in its voice assistant. Recent updates to the LLM-powered Alexa Plus drew sharp criticism from users who reported increased ad density and slower response times. While no official release date or pricing has been set, the project signifies a desperate move to reclaim ground in the mobile market as Amazon continues to chase AI parity with its major tech rivals.
