The Hanover Insurance Group Reports Record Second Quarter Earnings
The Hanover Insurance Group posted record-breaking financial results for the second quarter of 2026, driven by strong underwriting profitability and increased investment income. The company reported net income of $191.6 million, or $5.38 per diluted share, alongside an operating return on equity of 19.8% for the period.

The company’s performance was anchored by a combined ratio of 91.2%, which improved to 85.5% when excluding the impact of catastrophe losses. These losses totaled $91.8 million for the quarter, or 5.7 points of the combined ratio. Net premiums written rose by 4.6% as the firm successfully pushed renewal price increases across its Personal Lines, Core Commercial, and Specialty segments. Net investment income also saw a notable boost, climbing 13.4% to $119.6 million, supported by higher earned yields and robust operating cash flows.
John C. Roche, president and CEO, credited the results to the company's business model and disciplined execution. Looking ahead, the firm confirmed that Roche plans to retire at the end of 2026, with Dick Lavey slated to lead the company into its next chapter. Meanwhile, the insurer continues to return value to shareholders, repurchasing approximately 291,000 shares during the quarter for $55 million. The company enters the second half of the year with a book value per share of $105.40, marking a 3.5% increase from the end of March.
