Nuvoton Targets AI Server Reliability With New Battery-Monitoring ICs

As AI servers demand constant, uninterrupted power, Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan is moving to secure the infrastructure with new battery-monitoring ICs. The KA49703A and KA49713A chips, designed for high-voltage backup units, transition to mass production this September to address the thermal and efficiency challenges of modern data centers.

The new ICs integrate daisy-chain communication technology, allowing up to 55 devices to connect in series. This approach slashes the need for extra microcontrollers and isolation components, effectively shrinking board space and simplifying complex system architectures. Housed in a compact 7 mm x 7 mm QFP-48 package, the chips offer a high-precision voltage measurement accuracy of ±2.9 mV, providing the granular monitoring necessary for high-stakes AI workloads.

To address the logistical hurdles of transporting lithium-ion cells, the KA49713A features a specialized storage mode that drops shutdown current to under 0.1 microampere. By preventing battery depletion during transit and long-term storage, the device reduces the frequency of maintenance recharges and lowers overall operational costs. With samples currently available, Nuvoton aims to position these components as a standard for high-reliability energy management in both AI-server backup units and large-scale energy storage systems.
