Microsoft Vows Offline Fix After Xbox Outage Blocks Physical Discs

Xbox technology chief Scott Van Vliet stated that the company is investigating reports of the outage, which spanned nearly 24 hours starting last Sunday. Although Microsoft’s official documentation maintains that disc-based entitlement checks are designed to function during service failures, the recent event proved otherwise. Van Vliet attributed the failure to an external licensing service that prevented consoles from correctly verifying saved entitlements.

To prevent a recurrence, Microsoft plans to roll out a fix in an upcoming update. The incident arrives at a precarious time for physical media, as the industry shifts toward digital-only ecosystems. With Sony planning to phase out PlayStation discs by 2028 and Microsoft testing features to convert physical libraries into digital copies, the reliability of these licenses has become a central point of contention for gamers. For now, the company faces the challenge of proving that physical discs remain a stable, independent alternative to the volatile cloud-based services that failed users earlier this week.
