CME Group and FutureSports to Launch Financial Futures on Sports Data
CME Group is moving into the $650 billion sports economy by partnering with index administrator FutureSports to launch the world's first futures and options contracts based on athletic performance. These cash-settled instruments aim to provide professional leagues and stadium operators with tools to hedge risks tied to on-field outcomes.

The new contracts, built on the FutureSports Performance Indexes (FSPI), will translate league-approved statistical data into benchmark financial products. CME Group Chief Executive Officer Terry Duffy stated that the move brings formal price discovery and risk management discipline to an industry previously reliant on informal betting or private agreements. The indexes follow IOSCO principles for financial benchmarks to ensure transparency, with professional leagues providing the underlying data without participating in the governance of the financial products themselves.
Institutional interest is already high, with market participants such as Wedbush Securities eyeing these assets for a broader range of applications. Bob Fitzimmons, EVP at Wedbush, noted that the partnership effectively bridges the gap between insular sports statistics and global capital markets. The first monthly and quarterly contracts are expected to begin trading this summer, pending final regulatory clearance. FutureSports plans to announce a series of exclusive partnerships with major professional leagues to expand the index offerings, turning team and athlete performance into a tradable asset class for insurers, broadcasters, and sponsors.
