Construction firms face rising cyber threats as tech spending accelerates

Seven out of 10 construction firms suffered at least one cybersecurity breach over the past year, prompting a industry-wide shift toward aggressive digital modernization. According to a new Wipfli report, executives are moving away from viewing software as back-office overhead, treating their tech stacks as essential strategic assets.

The 2026 research from Wipfli, which surveyed 308 industry leaders, reveals that 54% of firms plan to overhaul their project management systems within the next two years. This push for modernization is largely driven by the need for better connectivity and scalability. While smaller firms often struggle with legacy systems, larger organizations generating over $250 million annually are setting the pace, with nearly 80% already implementing centralized governance standards.

Cybersecurity has evolved from a peripheral concern into a critical pillar of business continuity. Brad Werner, partner and construction industry leader at Wipfli, noted that the industry's history of underinvestment has made it a prime target for digital threats. Beyond data loss, a single incident can halt payroll and erode client trust. Consequently, 58% of surveyed firms have ramped up spending on security technologies to protect their operations.

Efficiency remains the primary motivator for these investments. Executives report that streamlining operations and lowering costs are the most significant benefits of their digital transitions. By leveraging data analytics and integrated platforms, contractors aim to protect thin margins and maintain competitiveness in an increasingly connected market.
