Samsung Shelves Ballie Robot Project Following Multi-Year Hiatus
After five years of recurring appearances as a CES centerpiece, Samsung’s yellow, soccer-ball-sized robot Ballie appears to have been quietly abandoned. The device, initially envisioned as a spatially aware smart home companion, was conspicuously missing from the company’s 2026 showcase, signaling a departure from its original retail trajectory.
Samsung described the project to Bloomberg as an active innovation platform rather than a consumer product, suggesting the technology has been relegated to internal research. While the company claims the robot continues to inform their work on ambient AI and privacy-focused design, the lack of a commercial roadmap confirms that the BB-8-inspired device will likely never reach store shelves.
This retreat leaves a gap in Samsung’s lineup at a time when competitors are aggressively pushing domestic automation. Rival firms, including LG with its CLOiD platform, filled the floor at CES 2026 with a new wave of AI-driven home robots. Despite Ballie’s high-profile integration of Google Gemini and built-in projection capabilities, Samsung has opted to pivot away from the hardware entirely, prioritizing abstract software development over physical product delivery.
