Proteotype Launches €3 Million Study to Test Home-Based Cancer Detection

With €3.023 million in funding, Portuguese diagnostics firm Proteotype is launching the INNOVATOR clinical study to validate its Enlighten® cancer detection test across 12 different cancer types, while testing the viability of home-based capillary blood collection to replace traditional venous draws.

The project, which begins October 1, 2026, aims to recruit 2,000 participants across Portugal, Spain, and Germany. By comparing paired venous and capillary samples gathered via Tasso® devices, researchers hope to prove that home-collected samples can provide the same diagnostic accuracy as clinical blood draws. The effort is supported by €2.116 million from the COMPETE 2030 programme, co-funded by the European Union.

This initiative expands on the company's existing MODERNISED study in the UK, bringing the total trial population to roughly 3,350 patients. According to CEO Wesley Sukdao, the goal is to dismantle geographical and resource-based barriers to cancer screening. Chief Investigator Professor Luís Costa noted that the study’s multi-country design is essential for generating data robust enough for the company’s planned CE marking pathway. Beyond clinical validation, the project will drive expansion at Proteotype’s Torres Vedras headquarters, with the company actively hiring for roles in regulatory affairs, clinical operations, and systems engineering to support the work through its projected 2028 conclusion.
