Harvard DCE Dean Nancy Coleman Honored for Digital Learning Leadership

Appointed in 2020 as the first woman to lead the division, Coleman oversees a diverse academic ecosystem serving over 25,000 annual learners from more than 120 countries. Her tenure builds upon a long-standing legacy of distance education, ranging from 1950s television broadcasts to specialized coursework developed for Navy submarine crews. This early adoption of hybrid technology provided a foundation that allowed the school to maintain academic continuity throughout the global pandemic.

"The tools keep changing—television, submarines, the internet, now AI-driven classrooms—but the mission hasn't: real rigor, real access, real outcomes," Coleman said. Her leadership extends to programs such as the Crimson Summer Academy, which has achieved a 99.8 percent college enrollment rate for its graduates over the past four decades. Beyond high school initiatives, she has strengthened professional development, with 74 percent of corporate clients returning for additional engagements in 2026. Coleman also recently examined the evolution of these efforts in her book chapter, "Yes, That Harvard," which outlines the future trajectory of continuing education on a national scale.
