Montage Technology Initiates Trial Production of CXL 3.2 Controller

Montage Technology has launched trial production of its CXL 3.2 Memory eXpander Controller, a move aimed at alleviating memory bottlenecks in AI and cloud computing environments. The new chip leverages the CXL 3.2 protocol to enable high-capacity memory pooling and expanded resource utilization for modern data center architectures.

The controller complies with CXL Type 3 specifications and incorporates PCIe 6.x and CXL 3.2 protocols, achieving data transfer rates of 64 GT/s. By integrating dual DDR5 memory controllers supporting speeds up to 8000 MT/s, the device converts host-side requests into DDR commands, bypassing traditional server capacity constraints. The hardware architecture includes dual RISC-V processor subsystems and broad support for form factors ranging from PCIe AIC cards to EDSFF modules.

Stephen Tai, President of Montage Technology, described the rollout as a critical milestone for the company’s commercialization efforts, noting that the solution addresses the surging memory requirements of the AI era. Industry leaders have already begun integrating the controller into next-generation products. Samsung and SK hynix have completed initial validation of the chip, while Intel and AMD confirmed the solution is designed for interoperability with their respective Xeon and EPYC server platforms. To support rapid deployment, Montage provides a comprehensive software development kit alongside analysis tools for compatibility testing. The company plans to demonstrate the technology at the upcoming CXL DevCon and the Future of Memory and Storage exhibition in Santa Clara.
