Asia's Oak Forests Face Unprecedented Extinction Risk
With more threatened oak species than any other region, Southeast and East Asia face an ecological crisis as human expansion threatens the survival of trees that anchor entire ecosystems. A new study reveals that most of these vulnerable species lack even a single backup in global botanical collections.

The Conservation Gap Analysis, led by The Morton Arboretum, highlights a stark disparity in tree preservation. Of the 54 species assessed across the region, 40—or 74%—are completely absent from managed botanical gardens. This stands in sharp contrast to the U.S., where only 1.1% of studied oaks lack such protection. Agriculture, specifically wood and pulp plantations, serves as the primary driver of habitat loss, affecting two-thirds of the studied species.
Some species exist on the absolute brink of disappearance. The Quercus trungkhanhensis is reduced to just two known individuals, while the Quercus dilacerata persists as a single recorded specimen outside of a protected zone. Even more concerning, the Quercus dankiaensis has not been sighted in its protected habitat since 1934, raising fears of its extinction. Researchers are now prioritizing immediate restoration efforts, including specialized propagation training and field surveys in Vietnam and Laos, to establish genetic repositories before these trees vanish entirely.
