North Island Credit Union Kicks Off Fifth Annual Literacy Drive

Throughout August, San Diego residents are encouraged to drop off new books at North Island Credit Union branches to support local elementary students. Now entering its fifth year, the initiative aims to provide reading materials to children in Title 1 schools who have limited access to home libraries.

The campaign, run in partnership with ABC 10News, supports the "Storytime" literacy initiative. Donors can visit any of the credit union’s regional locations—from La Mesa and Chula Vista to Escondido and Murrieta—to contribute new titles suitable for kindergarten through elementary-aged children. For those unable to deliver physical copies, the organization is also accepting monetary contributions to purchase books directly for students in need.

Steve O'Connell, President and CEO of North Island Credit Union, emphasized that these donations do more than fill shelves; they build confidence and foster a long-term passion for learning. The collected books will be distributed during mini book fairs held at Title 1 schools, a process supported by the San Diego Council on Literacy to ensure resources reach underserved communities. This local effort ties into the broader "If You Give a Child a Book…" campaign, which has distributed over one million books nationally since its inception in 2016.
