ICE Arrests Venezuelan Asylum-Seeking Family Outside Oregon Hospital

Yohendry De Jesus Crespo and Darianny Liseth González de Crespo were rushing their daughter, Diana, to Adventist Health Portland on January 16 to treat an uncontrollable nosebleed. Before the child could reach a doctor, three unmarked vehicles surrounded their car. Agents took the family into custody, eventually transferring them to the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas—a facility operated by the private firm CoreCivic that has faced recurring allegations of inadequate medical care and poor sanitary conditions.

Oregon state Representative Ricki Ruiz stated that the child remains ill and has not received necessary medical attention since the detention. Hospital spokesperson Heather Pease confirmed that the institution did not coordinate with federal authorities and had no prior knowledge of the law enforcement operation. The family, who hold pending asylum claims and possess no criminal records, had been scheduled for an immigration court date in 2028. This incident, occurring less than a thousand feet from where a Border Patrol agent shot a couple earlier this month, marks a notable escalation in the targeting of family units in the region.
