New Tool Maps Career Paths for Auto Repair Service Advisors
Forty-six percent of technicians now rank clear career progression as a non-negotiable hiring requirement, yet fewer than a third of repair shops currently provide one. To bridge this gap, Oceanside-based recruiting firm Technician Find has launched a free builder tool designed to map advancement from entry-level to general manager.

The Service Advisor Career Path Builder aims to formalize advancement criteria that have been historically absent in the independent repair sector. Chris Lawson, founder of Technician Find, reports that fewer than 5% of the 220 shops his firm has worked with since 2018 possessed documented growth plans for front-counter staff. Lawson argues that employee turnover is frequently misattributed to salary disputes when the real driver is a lack of professional visibility. By mapping specific roles—from service support to general manager—shops can provide employees with a concrete trajectory rather than vague promises.
Beyond recruitment, the tool functions as an internal audit of management practices. It forces owners to align advancement metrics with variables an advisor can actually control, such as repair order averages or gross profit margins. If a raise is tied to technician inspection quality or parts availability, the system flags the metric as flawed, preventing the resentment that occurs when an employee is penalized for factors outside their influence. The final output generates a readiness score for the business, effectively drafting a succession plan by identifying which areas of the shop require the owner’s direct oversight versus those that could be transitioned to a general manager.
