Apple Temporarily Pulls Telegram Over CSAM Content
Apple briefly removed Telegram from its App Store on Monday night, citing a violation of strict policies regarding the distribution of child sexual abuse material. The messaging platform was reinstated shortly after developers identified and purged the prohibited content, alongside banning the account responsible for the initial upload.
Following the restoration, Telegram issued a pointed response on X, questioning whether Apple would apply these moderation standards consistently across all applications in the future. The company pointed to its existing safety infrastructure, which claims to scrub millions of policy-violating posts and thousands of channels from its servers on a daily basis.
This incident mirrors a 2018 removal, marking the second time Apple has taken such measures against the platform. The scrutiny surrounding Telegram’s moderation practices has intensified recently, particularly after French authorities arrested CEO Pavel Durov in 2024. Durov currently faces charges related to enabling illicit transactions and complicity in hosting illegal content, which prompted the company to adjust its approach to private chats and disable specific features frequently flagged for misuse.
