New Research Challenges Myths About Electric Vehicle Fire Hazards

Firefighters can rely on familiar tools to manage electric vehicle blazes, according to a comprehensive study by UL Research Institutes. Data from 18 full-scale vehicle burns reveals that while lithium-ion batteries introduce specific toxic risks, standard water-based suppression remains the most effective method for controlling these incidents.

The study, conducted by the Fire Safety Research Institute, aimed to bridge critical knowledge gaps regarding how electric vehicles react in emergency scenarios. By replicating standard North American response times, researchers allowed fires to grow for six minutes before initiating suppression. The findings indicate that electric vehicles and gas-powered cars share similar fire growth rates and peak intensities, though electric models release more total energy due to their increased mass.

Researchers cautioned against relying on specialized equipment like fire blankets, which can trap flammable gases and create explosion risks in confined spaces. Instead, the team advocates for the use of water to limit cabin fires and control flames while the battery undergoes thermal runaway. Because direct battery cooling is often blocked by vehicle design, the primary goal for responders is managing the surrounding fire environment.

Safety protocols remain paramount, as the experiments highlighted significant contamination risks. Smoke and runoff water from battery fires contain elevated concentrations of metals and particulate fluoride, necessitating the consistent use of full personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus. To support these operations, the institute has introduced a tactical decision aid and plans to launch a specialized training course later this year to help departments modernize their response strategies.
