Avelo Airlines Marks Five-Year Growth with 10 Millionth Passenger
Five years after becoming the first new U.S. carrier in over a decade, Avelo Airlines has officially surpassed 10 million passengers. The budget airline, which began operations on April 28, 2021, reached the milestone amid a period of rapid fleet expansion and an aggressive push into smaller, regional airports.
Since its inception, the Houston-based carrier has operated nearly 80,000 flights, focusing on a model that prioritizes secondary airports to reduce costs and travel time for commuters. Founder and CEO Andrew Levy described the milestone as a validation of the airline's strategy to offer low-fare, nonstop service in an industry often dominated by major hubs. Currently, the airline serves 37 destinations across 15 states and Puerto Rico, backed by a workforce of over 1,000 employees.
Avelo is preparing for a significant hardware transition by 2028, when it expects to become the first domestic operator of the Embraer 195-E2. This fleet addition, part of an order for up to 100 jets placed in 2025, aims to eliminate middle seats across its service network. In the interim, the carrier continues to leverage its Boeing 737 fleet while expanding its Avelo PLUS membership program and credit card offerings to secure customer loyalty in the competitive low-cost sector.
