Pokémon Director Tetsuo Yajima Brings Monster Battles to Roblox
Tetsuo Yajima, the director behind several theatrical Pokémon films, is lending his creative vision to Monster Battles, a new turn-based PvP game launched on Roblox. Tokyo-based Studio Mayflower aims to blend the polished aesthetic of Japanese animation with the expansive, social architecture of the global gaming platform.

The project centers on tactical depth, tasking players with collecting, training, and deploying teams of unique creatures. While the mechanics prioritize accessible controls, the studio emphasizes a competitive loop built on predicting opponent behavior and mastering individual monster abilities. Taisei Tateno, CEO of Studio Mayflower, views this release as the foundation for a broader transmedia franchise that could eventually encompass retail merchandise and dedicated animation production.
Yajima noted that his decision to join the project stemmed from a shared creative philosophy with Tateno regarding entertainment’s role in children's lives. He expressed a desire for these character designs to transcend the Roblox environment, reaching audiences beyond the platform’s existing digital ecosystem. The game is currently available as a free-to-play title, utilizing optional in-game purchases to support its ongoing development as the studio looks to scale its influence in the global content market.
