Sunbird Returns to Android With Revamped iMessage Integration
After a three-year hiatus following critical security failures, Sunbird Messaging has returned to the Google Play Store. The service promises to bridge the gap between Android and iMessage, offering users features like high-quality media sharing and reaction support for a monthly subscription fee of $2.99.
The company claims its rebuilt architecture resolves the vulnerabilities that forced its initial shutdown. According to the developers, messages are now protected by AES-256 encryption at rest and during transit, with media files purged from servers within 72 hours. CEO Danny Mizrahi stated that an independent security firm audited the new platform and found no critical flaws. Crucially, the app no longer retains Apple ID passwords or persistent authentication tokens, opting to destroy credentials once a session is established.
While Apple and Google have improved cross-platform communication through RCS support, gaps remain in group chat functionality. Sunbird seeks to fill this void by centralizing SMS, Google Messages, and iMessage in one interface. The roadmap for later this year includes expanding integration to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, alongside an AI-driven assistant designed to summarize threads and draft responses.
