Universal Technical Institute Scales Back Fiscal Forecast Amid Growth Spends

Universal Technical Institute reported a 7.2% revenue increase to $218.9 million for the fiscal 2026 third quarter, yet the company is adjusting its annual outlook downward. While new student starts climbed 10.9%, the education provider is navigating a tightening margin environment driven by heavy investment in new campus launches.

The Phoenix-based educator saw net income drop to $2.3 million from $10.7 million in the same period last year, a decline primarily tied to $9 million in strategic growth expenditures. CEO Jerome Grant noted that while newer sites like UTI-Atlanta are outperforming expectations, the company missed conversion targets for fourth-quarter high school starts in its Auto and Diesel programs. This performance gap prompted management to tighten its full-year guidance, now projecting revenue between $893 million and $900 million.

To drive efficiency, the company is launching a multi-year transition toward a unified operating model. This strategy aims to standardize processes across its UTI and Concorde Career Colleges divisions. Despite the current dip in earnings, leadership remains focused on long-term capacity expansion, with $85.4 million in capital expenditures already deployed this fiscal year to support facility upgrades and new program rollouts.
