Experts Label Trump-Class Warship Proposal a Costly Boondoggle

President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new class of warships bearing his name has triggered sharp rebukes from defense analysts, who argue the project is a multi-billion dollar vanity scheme. Critics warn that the massive, nuclear-capable vessels are strategically flawed, technically impractical, and likely to be abandoned before completion.

Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and International Studies predicts the ships will never reach the water, noting they conflict with the Navy’s current focus on distributed firepower. With estimated costs reaching $9 billion to $10 billion per vessel, analysts suggest the program is destined to be canceled by a future administration. Dan Grazier, a fellow at the Stimson Center, contends the design is crippled by an obsession with cutting-edge technology, creating systems so complex that failure becomes inevitable.

Beyond fiscal concerns, experts highlight significant geopolitical risks. William Hartung of the Quincy Institute warns that equipping these ships with nuclear-armed cruise missiles creates a dangerous ambiguity, as adversaries may struggle to distinguish between conventional and nuclear strikes. Furthermore, at 840 feet long and displacing 35,000 tons, these vessels are described by Bernard Loo of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies as oversized "bomb magnets" that function more as prestige projects than functional naval assets. With the "Golden Dome" missile defense system also looming, observers are calling on Congress to enforce stricter oversight on these high-cost initiatives.
