Trump Installs Project 2025 Author at Interior Department Watchdog Office
Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) has denounced the appointment of Dennis Kirk to the Interior Department’s Office of Inspector General, labeling the move a fraud on the American public. Kirk, a former White House budget official, co-authored Project 2025 chapters advocating for the aggressive decentralization and privatization of the federal government.
The appointment places a key architect of the controversial Project 2025 agenda directly within the oversight body responsible for investigating corruption at the Interior Department. This office currently faces scrutiny over several high-profile allegations, including conflict-of-interest claims against Associate Deputy Secretary Karen Budd-Falen and potential ethics violations involving no-bid contracts awarded to Trump associates for renovations at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Critics argue the move is part of a broader strategy to neutralize independent accountability. Former inspector general Mark Greenblatt, who was dismissed in January 2025, stated that installing an operative with Kirk’s background threatens the integrity of the federal government's oversight institutions. While an Interior IG spokesperson declined to comment on personnel matters, lawmakers continue to press for investigations into the department, currently led by Doug Burgum, amidst ongoing concerns regarding political interference in federal management.
